submission, will not be accepted after offer is made/n/n/nPatients
with the following criteria may be considered for admission to a
stepdown unit./nPatients meeting admission criteria:/n1. Cardiac
System/n• Hemodynamically stable myocardial infarction with
increased nursing care needs./n• Any hemodynamically stable
dysrhythmia./n• Any hemodynamically stable patient without evidence
of myocardial infarction but requiring temporary or permanent
pacemaker./n• Mild-to-moderate congestive heart failure without
shock./n• Hypertensive urgency without evidence of end-organ
damage./n• NSTEMI; STEMI post percutaneous coronary intervention
(PCI); Heart Failure requiring inotropic support, dysrhythmias,
acute stroke; Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIAs); titration of
select drips; removal of arterial/venous sheaths; special
procedures with MD, such as chest tube insertion./n2. Pulmonary
System/n• Medically stable ventilator patients for weaning and
chronic care in units appropriately equipped and with staff
competency./n• Patients who require frequent vital signs or
aggressive pulmonary physiotherapy./n• Patients requiring high
oxygen delivery greater than 6 liters./n3. Neurologic Disorders/n•
Patients with established, stable stroke who require frequent
neurologic assessments or frequent suctioning or turning./n•
Patients 24 hours post thrombolytic administration in accordance
with the 24 Hour Thrombolytic Protocol Timeframe./n• Patients with
chronic but stable neurologic disorders, such as neuromuscular
disorders, who required frequent nursing interventions./n4.
Other/n• Patients with end-stage heart, lung, renal, or other
disease processes complicated by an acute illness requiring
increased monitoring./n5. Drug Ingestion and Drug Overdose/n• Any
patient requiring frequent neurologic, pulmonary, or cardiac
monitoring for a drug ingestion or overdose who presents with
hemodynamic and respiratory stability./n6. Gastrointestinal (GI)
Disorders/n• GI bleeding with minimal orthostatic hypotension
responsive to fluid therapy./n• Variceal bleeding without evidence
of bright red blood by gastric aspirate and stable vital signs./n•
Acute liver failure with stable vital signs./n7. Endocrine/n•
Diabetic ketoacidosis patients requiring constant intravenous
infusion of insulin, or frequent injections of regular insulin
during the early regulation phase after recovery from diabetes
ketoacidosis./n• Hyperosmolar state with resolution of coma./n•
Thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroid state requiring frequent
monitoring./n8. Surgical/n• The postoperative patient who,
following major surgery, is hemodynamically stable but may require
fluid resuscitation and transfusion due to major fluid shifts./n•
The postoperative patient who requires close nurse monitoring
during the first 24 hrs. Examples include but are not limited to
carotid endarterectomy; peripheral vascular reconstruction; the
neurosurgical patient requiring frequent neurological exams; V-P
shunt revision, renal transplant, etc./n• Post-operative patients
requiring increased nursing care needs for pain management and
surgical site care./n9. Miscellaneous/n• Appropriately treated and
resolving early sepsis without evidence of shock or secondary organ
failure./n• Patients requiring closely titrated fluid
management./n• Obstetrical patients admitted at any point in their
pregnancy and postpartum period for treatment of
pre-eclampsia/eclampsia or other medical problems requiring cardiac
monitoring and increased nursing care needs./n• Any patient
requiring frequent nursing observation or extensive time
requirement for wound management who does not fall under the above
categories may be considered for admission (example: Addison's
disease, renal failure, delirium tremens, hypercalcemia)./n•
Patients may be admitted from the following at the direction of the
attending physician (or their designee):/no Emergency Department/no
Other Methodist Hospital nursing units/no Operating Room or other
