Certifications: Valid driver's license required Description: The
Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing
care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider's
orders. Dispensing and administering medications is also part of
the role. The RN assists Licensed Independent Providers in
examinations and treatment of patients. Nursing and supervisory
techniques are applied in the care and treatment of
inmates/residents. The RN performs all technical and clinical
procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Nursing
skills are utilized in the area and treatment of inmates/residents.
The RN attends sick call with the physician to see
inmates/residents. Preparation for examinations includes preparing
a list of inmates/residents. The RN prepares the examining room and
equipment for use. Operating pill call and dispensing medication
while documenting as required is essential. Communication with
Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders
is necessary. The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents
with illnesses or injuries. Referrals to emergency rooms or other
healthcare facilities are made as required. Emergency procedures
are performed as needed, and Licensed Independent Providers are
notified for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating
professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early
releases is included. The RN provides guidance and supervision to
nursing care provided by licensed and non-licensed staff.
Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff and
outside providers is critical. The RN utilizes established policies
and procedures in decision-making. Regular evaluations of medical
services are conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
Maintaining security and confidentiality of all medical records is
required. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure
documentation of services. Monitoring of all potential catastrophic
illnesses occurs regularly. Pharmacy use is audited for adherence
to formulary as directed. Compliance with applicable pharmacy laws,
especially those covering controlled substances, is mandatory.
Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior is part of
the responsibilities. Inspection of the medical unit for potential
contraband is required. Health counseling and education on an
individual or group basis may be needed. Assisting in preparing and
maintaining various records, reports, and logs is part of the role.
Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and
technical documents is essential. The RN reviews and processes
responses to lawsuits and may attend court hearings as necessary.
Facilitating accreditation of the medical program by providing
efficient medical services is necessary. Preparation of safety and
accident reports as required by policies and procedures is
included. Taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents
